As a result, to make sure that there were friendly states on its borders, the USSR fostered and assisted in the installation of communist-dominated governments in Romania, Bulgaria, and Poland. Within a year, an iron curtain w as claimed to have descended over Europe and separated the captive nations of the East practicing communism and the free nations of the West dealing with democracy. These tensions accumulated and lead to the Cold War (Engdahl, 2010).Both countries contributed to the worsening of Cold War tensions. One way was the Berlin blockade, where the Soviet Union attempted to starve out the western powers and coerce them into leaving Berlin. It was followed by proxy wars, where both countries supported different antagonists, like in the Vietnam War. Moreover, the Cuban missile crisis almost resulted into a massive nuclear war. However, during the Prague spring the Soviet Army crushed Czechoslovakia brutally in an attempt to free it. Later the two nations were always competing for superiority. I t was a result of the culmination of tensions between the two countries. Late in the nineteenth century, the Japans economy was gradually growing and industrializing quickly. Being a country with limited resources, Japan had to rely on imported materials for its industries, most of which were sourced from America. Therefore, without it, its economy could be a sham. Roosevelts administration sanctioned the stringent economic laws that prohibited export of some materials to Japan. Moreover, the latter was over-populated, and the United States decided to close doors to Japans emigrants. The leaders at the time thought that the only solution would be to invade China, where the excess population would be settled, and the Japanese economy would survive based on the Chinas import market.Thus, the 1930s were characterized by a series of wars aimed to invade China and succeed in Manchuria. Each step of aggression was compounded with greater denunciation from the United States. Therefore, reg ardless of the invasion, the Japan Army received limited economic and military assistance, and later the British and the Dutch did the same crippling the Japans economy. When China had refused to agree on its terms, Japan sought ways to inhibit foreign aid from reaching the former.In 1940, Japan sought another strategy. They calculated that several territories in the South Pacific and South-East Asia controlled by the Netherlands, Great Britain, and France seemed incapable of defending. If they were under Japanese control, some of their problems would be solved. However, by this time, the United States had increased their economic sanctions to such an extent that by late 1941 Japan could not make more purchases from them. Since Japan was also entirely dependent on the United States for oil imports, it could no longer conduct war against China, and it was a humble pie the country was not prepared to eat.The result was tumultuous diplomatic maneuvers between the United States and Japa n. Benito Mussolinis Doctrine of Fascism free essay sample
Benito Mussolini outlines several essential characteristics of his preferred political ideology, Fascism, in what has become known as the Doctrine of Fascism. In this paper, Mussolini outlines his vision of the ideology, and explains the major issues that Fascism will address once it becomes the leading political system in Italy. Mussoliniââ¬â¢s major points as outlined in the Doctrine included an extreme emphasis on nationalism, organization and modernization of the state, persistent focus on religion, life as a struggle, and the notion that individuals exist only for the improvement of society as a whole. Wolfgang Schieder, after reviewing the Doctrine of Fascism, explains Mussoliniââ¬â¢s success based on it and clarifies what exactly Adolf Hitler adopted from the Italian Fascist ideology to incorporated into his own Third Reich. One of the fundamental tenants in Mussolini Doctrine of Fascism is the strong sense of nationalism, which we wants the Italian people to embrace. As a result, he calls for a unification of all Italians over his Fascist regime. Mussolini truly thought that the Italian nation was preordained for greatness, and that the only way to fulfil this destiny was through extreme social cooperation under Fascism. To that end, Mussolini advocated a mass modernization of the Italian state, centralization of government and creation of a state in ââ¬Å"spirit, not territory. â⬠Mussolini wanted Italy to leave its mark on history through the fascist system, so his Doctrine emphasised cultural contributions such as art and philosophy. Mussolini believed that a nationââ¬â¢s power was derived from its people, who had to be ââ¬Å"numerous, hard working, and well regulatedâ⬠in order to succeed. A further crucial element of Mussoliniââ¬â¢s Doctrine was that he constantly stresses the role of the state and government in a Fascist state. As opposed to other political systems such as socialism, the state in a fascist society does not act as a mere ââ¬Å"watchdogâ⬠or ââ¬Å"night watchman,â⬠simply protecting its citizens and facilitating material gains. Rather, the state according to Mussolini is the spiritual, moral and political apex of each human being. Its duties are to give a ââ¬Å"concrete form to the political, juridical and economical organisation of the countryâ⬠though a series of practical actions. Mussolini sees the state as an actual physical manifestation of all positive aspects of the human spirit, and furthermore acting as an ââ¬Å"immanent conscience of the nation. Moreover, The Doctrine of Fascism goes on to explain that through the state, human beings are transformed from primitive tribal beings to glorious emperors, gaining level of power that would be impossible to achieve as an individual or small group. Finally, Mussolini establishes that the only way for one to immortalize th emselves, and be remembered within a nation was through beneficial contributions to the state. One particular notion within the Doctrine that seems peculiar at first glance is the importance that Mussolini places on religion, specifically the Catholic Church. For such a modern and practical-based system, it seems rather surprising that Mussolini not only tolerates religion, but respects and facilitates its progression. Mussoliniââ¬â¢s official reasoning for this is that similar to the state, religion is effectively a ââ¬Å"manifestation of the spirit,â⬠and so the Catholic Church and Mussoliniââ¬â¢s fascism share this commonality. In actuality, the real reason Mussolini was so tolerant of the church likely goes far beyond that. Wolfgang Schieder, whose ideas will be developed further on, explains that Mussolini required the Churchââ¬â¢s support in order to gain the unwavering support of the Italian people. Mussolini was considered the first national socialist to repair the damaged link between the state and church, and was rewarded for it with full support of the Pope and Catholic Church. Mussolini was a man obsessed with the notion of empire, and this is reflected in his Doctrine. The concept of force and discipline was stressed not simply in military conquest, but every aspect of life for the average Italian. War is inevitable, as it is simply the manifestation of the strength and vigour of the Italian people that wishes to expand itself, never looking back. Peace was considered as merely a ââ¬Å"mask to surrender and cowardice. â⬠Mussolini stressed that Italians required ââ¬Å"forces, duty, and sacrificeâ⬠in order to rise again to their former greatness, that of the Roman Empire. This is also Mussoliniââ¬â¢s rationale for harsh and severe actions against any who would resist or try and undermine fascism. Finally, there remains perhaps the most basic and yet most profound idea present in the entire doctrine; being the notion that life is a struggle. The entire doctrine constantly discusses this concept, and in fact Mussolini uses it to justify the entire doctrine. Mussolini states that, ââ¬Å"fascism wants a man to be active and absorbed in action with all his energies,â⬠a desire which he considers synonymous with fascismââ¬â¢s own desire to be constantly progressing. Italians were not only encouraged to frequently be taking action, but it was considered their ââ¬Å"duty to conquer out of life what was really worthy to them. â⬠Mussolini is essentially stating that he believes that a virtuous Italian should be constantly struggling with his life, never becoming complacent and always fighting to better himself. Fascism, being an extension of the human spirit, naturally mirrored these qualities. Wolfgang Schieder, analyzes Mussoliniââ¬â¢s political success and what he the extent to which Mussolini facilitated Hitlerââ¬â¢s rise to power in Germany. According to Schieder it largely because of what he calls the ââ¬ËPhilo-Fascist climateââ¬â¢which was present in Germany during the early 1930ââ¬â¢s. During this era Germanyââ¬â¢s economy was in ruin largely die to war reparations, and the nation as a whole was not in very good shape. The German peoples experiment with democracy through the Weimar Republic was in many ways viewed as a failure, and people were looking to alternative models of governments. Fascism was being presented as a viable alternative to a ââ¬Ëdiscredited Parliamentary systemââ¬â¢ What is important to note is that Schieder thinks that the pro-Fascist atmosphere of Germany at the time was largely because of Mussolini himself. Mussolini was a very charismatic figure, and he was especially adept at handling the media in Germany. He often surprised them by speaking German, and by the end of any interaction with the German press Mussolini left them in awe of himself as a person and of the Fascist system, which he had implemented. In the early 1930ââ¬â¢s according to Schieder there was no other form of dictatorship in the world that was as widely accepted as Fascism was. This created an environment is which Hitler stood to profit from pro-Fascist sentiment, the more he moulded his political strategy in that direction. According to Schieder there were two developments, which enabled Hitlerââ¬â¢s acceptance by the German elites. Firstly, the Great Depression had opened the discussion about implementing a ââ¬Ënew economic orderââ¬â¢, and in this face of rising left-wing economics happening during this time made such a development even more necessary. Moreover, the German elites at first didnââ¬â¢t appreciate Hitler for what he truly was, and in many ways they underestimated him. In a time of economic chaos, the ââ¬ËItalian Experimentââ¬â¢ was viewed as a success, and its implementation in Germany was being justified under the context that ââ¬ËHitler was not Mussoliniââ¬â¢, and that if he became chancellor he would easily be manipulated by the German elites. Mussolini paved the way for Hitler because there was a tremendous amount of admiration for Mussolini within Germany, and the more Hitler aligned himself with Mussolini, the more he stood to benefit from this in a highly fragmented society. The manner in which Germany embraced Fascism can be best represented by two people at the time: Emil Ludwig and Theodore Wolff. The two men were high advocate of democracy in Germany, who shifted their support to Mussolini and his Fascist Doctrine. They did so out of the necessity to temporarily establish temporarily establish an authoritarian regime rooted in Fascism to offer Germany a political way out of their precarious situation. Although German understanding of Fascism can be characterized by ââ¬Ëselective readingsââ¬â¢, it was nonetheless the perfect political system for Germany given their historical circumstances. Given Fascism highly nationalistic nature, it was ideal for a nation like Germany that was still rebuilding from World War 1. Moreover, the German elites saw Fascism as a better political alternative to democracy, or even worse, socialism as was being pursued elsewhere in the world. As this paper has tried to illustrate, the correlations between fascism as it developed in Germany and Italy are not merely coincidental dictatorships, but there is much more to the story. After all, Hitler did view Mussolini has his political mentor.

Matchbox 20 free essay sample
In March, Matchbox 20 returned to the Orpheum Theater in Boston, Massachusetts to play a sold-out show. Many excited fans (and I) couldnt wait to see them. Even though I had really bad seats in the balcony, I didnt mind. Around 7: 30 p.m. the first band, David Ganza, came on. They were unknown, and not many saw them. Most were hanging out in the lobby or came late. But those who saw this band were supportive and I though they were okay. Then around 8 p.m., the seats started to fill as many fans waited for Matchbox 20. I sat there watching the crew set up the equipment. At 8: 30, the lights lowered and a small film started to play. After the film the curtain went up and the lead singer, Rob Thomas, started singing Busted. Everyone, (including me), started screaming. During the first set, everyone got up and starting singing along to Real World, 3 a. During the second set, they played a lot of new songs which probably ended up on the second album. During one of the songs people took out their lighters and had a candle ceremony. Near the end, Rob Thomas informed the audience that this was their last American show for a while and introduced everyone in the band. They ended with the song, Long Day and left with the Matchbox 20 logo flashing on the screen. I recommend checking out this band because if you love their album, youll like seeing them live. . Leaving few displeased, Matchbox 20 played some well-known songs from their latest album, Yourself or Someone Like Yourself. They kept the crowd singing with their most popular Push, which is currently played on many radio stations, as well as music countdowns. It is one of five major hospitals in the area and has recently built a small addition for treating well-known patients, such as professional football players, top company executives, and singing stars. Visiting or local celebrities always choose City Hospital if they need treatment. City Hospital has about 1200 hospital beds and employs 4500 individuals, including about 40 patient escorts. The job of patient escort is a rather simple one, requiring no special physical or mental talents. The work is easy, few skills are required, and the pay for the job is considered good. When patients need to be moved from one location to another, patient escorts are summoned to assist in the move. If the move is only a short distance, however, a nurse can move the patient. Of particular importance is the fact that patient escorts almost always take patients who are being discharged from their hospital room to the front door of the hospital. A wheelchair is always used, even if the patient is able to walk unassisted. Thus, the typical procedure is for the nurse to call for a patient escort; the escort gets a wheelchair and goes to the patientââ¬â¢s room, assists the patient into the wheelchair, picks up the patientââ¬â¢s belongings, wheels the patient down to the hospitalââ¬â¢s front door or to his or her car in the parking lot, and returns to the work station. The job of patient escort is indeed critical to the hospital since the escort is always the last hospital representative the patient sees, and hence has a considerable influence on the patientââ¬â¢s perception of the hospital. Of approximately 40 escorts, about three-fourths are men, and one-fourth are women. Most are high school graduates in their early twenties. Some, particularly those on the early morning shift, are attending college at night and working for the hospital to earn money to pay college expenses. Four of the escorts are older women who had previously served as hospital volunteers and then decided to become full-time employees instead. Turnover among patient escorts is quite high and has averaged 25% in recent years. In addition, upward mobility in the hospital is quite good, and as a result, another 25% of the escorts typically transfer to other jobs in the hospital each year. Thus, about half of the patient escorts need to be replaced annually. The hospital follows a standard procedure when hiring patient escorts. When a vacancy occurs, the human resource department reviews the file of applications of individuals who have applied for the patient escort job. Usually the file contains 15 to 20 applications. Two or three applicants are usually picked and asked to come to the hospital for interview. The applicants are interviewed first by the human resource department and then by the patient escort supervisor. The majority of those interviewed typically know some other employees of the hospital, so the only reference check is a call to these employees. Every new escort attends an orientation program the first day on the job. This is conducted by a member of the hospitalââ¬â¢s human resource department. The program consists of a complete tour of the hospital; a review of all the hospitalââ¬â¢s HR policies, including a description of its promotion, compensation, and disciplinary policies; and a presentation of the hospitalââ¬â¢s mission and philosophy. During this orientation session, employees are told that the hospitalââ¬â¢s image in the community is of major importance and that all employees should strive to maintain and enhance this image through their conduct. After orientation, all patient escorts receive on-the-job training by their immediate supervisor. During the last two years, the hospital has experienced a number of problems with patient escorts, which have had an adverse effect on the hospitalââ¬â¢s image. Several patients have complained to the hospital administration that they were treated rudely, or in some cases roughly, by one or more patient escorts. Some complained that they were ordered around or scolded by an escort during the discharge process. Others stated that their escorts were careless when wheeling them out of the hospital to their cars. One person reported that an escort carelessly tipped him over. All escorts are required to wear identification tags, but patients usually canââ¬â¢t remember the escortââ¬â¢s name when complaining to the hospital. Additionally, the hospital usually has difficulty determining which escort served which patient because escorts often trade patients. Finally even when the hospital can identify the offending escort, the employees can easily deny any wrongdoing. He or she often counters that patients are generally irritable as a result of their illness and hence are prone to complain at even the slightest provocation. At the request of the hospitalââ¬â¢s top management, the assistant human resource director asked the human resource manager, the head of the staffing section within the human resource department, and the chief supervisor of patient escorts to meet with her to review the entire procedure used to select patient escorts. It was hoped that a new procedure could be devised that would eliminate the hiring of rude, insulting, or careless patient escorts. During the meeting, a number of suggestions were made as to how the selection procedure might be improved. Criticisms of the present system were also voiced. The chief supervisor of patient escorts argued that the problem with the hospitalââ¬â¢s present system is that the application blank is void of any really useful information. He stated that the questions that really give insights into the employees are no longer on the application blank. He suggested that applicants be asked about their hobbies, outside activities, and their personal likes and dislikes on the application blank. The head of the staffing section suggested that each applicant be asked to submit three letters of recommendation from people who know the applicant well. He wanted these letters to focus on the prospective employeeââ¬â¢s personality, particularly the applicantââ¬â¢s ability to remain friendly and polite at all times. For Daryl it is clear he needs cocaine in order to go about his daily business. He meets a woman in a bar and does cocaine with her. It is evident that this is the only way he can have relationships with people, the only thing that makes his life worth living. It consumes his thoughts. He wants friends to send him cocaine, he wants cocaine to be the biggest part of his life. He has no real esteem from his work, only from the drugs he uses. The same is true of Charlie, who is also addicted. You can see how small her life has become because of her addiction and how trapped she is in the vicious circle that is her dependence. Not only does it harm you physically, but it brings into your life people who have a very negative impact. Her husband is abusive and life with him is like riding a roller-coaster. She is made very vulnerable by her addiction and is easy to exploit. Daryl is a little different in that he is exploited by himself not by others. He does serious damage to his career by stealing and is a very difficult person to control. A serious problem relating to addiction is that it affects the way you behave. You become irresponsible and disinhibited. You don't know why you do the things you do, you just do them. This often has serious consequences and often leads to a downward spiral. All that really separates us from the animals is our sense of cause and effect: if we are disinhibited we no longer care about what happens because of what we do. In the film, this is evident at several moments. One of the most significant is near the beginning when Daryl realizes the girl in his bed has had a heart attack. He tries to hide the evidence of the drug use, an act which reveals how disinhibited he is . He should simply take responsibility for his actions and tell the police the truth. Another example is how he embezzles nearly one hundred thousand dollars from his employer. This action has severe consequences but he doesn't seem to care at the time. He can't think through from one step to the next. It is clear that addiction is a serious social problem that affects many people. The rehab centre is proof of this. The relationships between Charlie and her husband is definitely evidence of this. Their co-dependency is a perfect illustration of how addiction can be a social disease (Lawson, 12). Both of these two people reinforce one another's addiction, making things much worse for both of them. People with this kinds of addictions need real professional help (Boyd, 20). Each of the characters in this film have roles to play. Daryl is clearly the self-destructive type, who has trouble realizing the consequences of his actions. He is facing down a lot of demons. Richard is the wise therapist-figure who has seen it all. He is very supportive, the kind of person an addict comes to for help. Charlie and her husband are co-dependents who are destroying one another. Each of these roles interact in the film in interesting ways. For example, we Daryl sliding into Richard's role with regards to Charlie. In a sense, he is becoming her counsellor, trying to break the cycle of dependence she shares with her husband.
